Contact Lenses Care

“Using contact lenses can be tiresome. But even so, you should always make sure that they are safe to use.”

You can do this by making sure that you do proper contact lenses care. Remember, you bought contact lenses to correct your vision and not to exacerbate your eye problems.

Make Sure That Your Hands Are Clean

First and foremost, you should always ensure that your hands are clean when handling your contact lenses and when putting them on your eyes. Wash your hands using soap and warm water. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a clean towel. Refrain from using lotions, hair spray, or other chemicals before putting on your contacts. These may stick to the lens and ultimately cause pain, irritation and blur when you are already using the contact lenses.

Don´t Wear Them Inside Out

Second, if you it is your first time to wear contact lenses; be careful not to wear them inside out. Though this will not damage your eyes, it can cause discomfort. Put your contact lens on your fingertip in such a way that it will form a cup. Take a view of it sideways. If it looks like it is flaring out at the top, it is inside out. If it looks like a “U”, then it is the right side out.

Follow Your Doctor’s Instructions

Third, follow your doctor’s instructions on using your contact lenses. For instance, if your doctor gave you some reminders on the wearing schedule of your contact lenses, this schedule must be followed as it is specific for the type of contact lenses that you are using.

Clean and Store Your Contact Lenses

Fourth, clean and store your contact lenses in a fresh solution properly. Again, follow the instructions of your doctor. Contact lenses care is not absolute for all types. Special care and specific products are necessary for particular types of contact lenses. This also holds true in terms of eye drops. Some eye drops and products are not safe to use with your contact lenses.

Disinfecting Solution

Fifth, make sure that you put your contact lenses in a disinfecting solution when you are not using it. Do not ever leave them exposed to dust or air as these might infect them. Of course, your lens solution must be fresh. Any discoloration may be a sign of expiration or contamination.

Do Not Reuse Lens Solutions

Topping off is also a big no-no. Topping off is when you add some lens solution to the solution that is left in the case of your contact lenses. Do not reuse lens solutions.
Sixth, if you must rewet your contact lenses, use only the prescribed solutions. Never lick your contact lenses or use other alternatives like tap water.
Seventh, avoid using lash-building mascara or permanent mascara when you are wearing your contact lenses. These will create build ups in your lenses that you may not be able to take off.

To cap off these contact lenses care tips, make sure that if you experience any problem while wearing your contact lenses, go to your doctor immediately. Some problems you may encounter are persistent irritation, discomfort, or too much tear production. It is also important that you replace your contacts whenever necessary.
